Waste Water Treatment Plant Trek
[EVENT] The City of Plattsburgh has over 100 miles of underground sewer pipes that carry wastewater from homes and businesses to the City wastewater treatment plant. The plant was constructed in 1973 and has had a number of upgrades since that time. The plant is permitted to treat 16 million gallons per day (mgd) of dry weather flow. When it rains, the plant can handle up to 50 mgd.
Wastewater can include food, rags, paper, feces, bodily fluids, cleaners, chemicals, pathogenic organisms (bad germs), sand, dirt, sticks, pharmaceuticals, shoes, cell phones, money, sunglasses plus anything and everything else that is put down the drain. Before wastewater can be put back into the environment, this contamination must be removed and the water rendered safe to the environment and public. The treatment process uses physical, chemical, and biological systems, plus a lot of technology, science, dedicated employees, and hard work to accomplish this.
On Saturday June 20, 2015 at 1:00 pm, plant staff will be demonstrating how the entire process works and providing a tour of the facility. Come and see some of the interesting things that ultimately find their way to this critical component of City infrastructure and discover why it is really a resource recovery facility that converts contaminated wastewater back into water that is clean and safe enough to be put back into the environment.
For this Trek, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
